Where the money goes
File opening, theory lectures and test, a minimum of 20 practical class hours for first-timers (the biggest line item at AED 100-180 per hour depending on school and package), the road test fee, and license issuance. The variable nobody budgets for: failed road tests. Each retest adds a fee plus, at most schools, mandatory extra classes – two fails can add AED 1,500+.
Can you skip it entirely?
If you hold a license from an approved country (GCC, UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia and around 30 others), you can exchange it directly for a few hundred dirhams – no classes, no tests. Drivers with experience from other countries may qualify for reduced hours after an assessment. Once you’re licensed, the spending starts: see our car loan, registration and fuel cost calculators for the full ownership picture.
