Athletes from across the UAE will take on a 1,000km walking challenge tackling the deserts of Abu Dhabi and passing sites of historical, cultural and environmental significance.

The initiative Walk 1000, launched by Active Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Emirates Foundation and PureHealth, introduces a powerful community-driven health program designed to inspire an active lifestyle across the emirate. Launching on November 1st, 2024, the initiative has already garnered broad support from prominent organizations including the Department of Community Development, Abu Dhabi Police, and the Ministry of Defense, with sponsorship from Mubadala, Ali & Sons, Al Masaood Energy, Aldar Properties, Bayanat, and EDGE.

What is ‘Walk 1000’?

The Walk 1000 initiative is a massive health and wellness campaign inviting the Abu Dhabi community to participate in a 1,000-kilometer walking challenge. Not only does it encourage participants to embrace healthier habits, but it also provides an exceptional opportunity to explore 30 culturally and environmentally significant sites across Abu Dhabi. This unique route covers remarkable landmarks, from Al Sila in the west to the Liwa desert, through Jebel Hafeet, and concluding in Al Wathba. Along the journey, participants will pass through iconic locations that speak to the emirate’s deep cultural, historical, and environmental heritage.

At the heart of the Walk 1000 challenge lies a flagship 1,000-kilometer journey—equivalent to approximately 24 marathons. A dedicated team of 10 elite athletes will walk an average of 33 kilometers daily, leading the charge and setting a visible example of endurance and commitment. The athletes participating in the challenge include:
